Where STRIVE begins

“Everything in your life gets better when you get better, and nothing is ever going to get better until you get better.”

What have YOU changed about yourself?  Your work habits, your leadership style, your standards, or the tacit approval of behaviors that you have given to the team around you since February 22, 2023?  That’s the day we started talking about STRIVE as our annual theme.

STRIVE for excellence begins with YOU.  It begins with me. 

I’m starting with the man in the mirror.

I’m asking him to change his ways.

And no message could have been any clearer

If we want to make the world a better place

Take a look at yourself and make that change.

Now you’re singing that song.  You may have even danced.  You will not be able to get it out of your head the rest of the day. 

It’s not about working longer hours, working harder the hours you are in the building or portraying yourself as a martyr for the situation that you find yourself in.  STRIVE is about leading change.  STRIVE is about identifying the shortfalls in your surroundings and doing something about it (not waiting on your boss to tell you).  STRIVE is about determining what excellence looks like and chasing after it with reckless abandon.

Are you working on yourself?  If you are not growing, you are dying. 

  • What great habit muscles are you developing?
  • What “stinkin’ thinkin’” are you getting rid of?
  • What words are coming out of your mouths that don’t build others up but tear people down? [see Proverbs 18:21]
  • In what ways are you taking control of your own growth?
  • Are you comfortable?  Because if you are comfortable the STRIVE is missing. 

Oftentimes these thoughts fall into our minds but our follow through is horrible.  We recognize what we need to do but we don’t act on it.  We wait on others to tell us what we need to do.  We do not take the initiative to learn how to learn better, learn how to lead better or commit to be great at every aspect of running our businesses and representing our brands.  Ninety plus percent of us.  Don’t you want to be in the top 10 percent?  I am responsible for me, and you are responsible for you.  That is what STRIVE is about.

If I could guide our quest for excellence (STRIVE) for April 2023, I would yearn that we purpose to be great at these three things:

  1. Schedules are completed and posted two weeks in advance.  If we are consistent in communicating with our teams on when we need them in our businesses we will develop trust.
  2. Hold everyone, including ourselves, to the uniform standard of our respective brands.  This includes no earbuds. Doing this simple task will create accountability.
  3. Keep the back door locked.  Every team member should enter/exit through the front door.  This will establish a safe workplace, eliminate the potential for theft and communicate that we really do care and look out for our people.
